CBAM – CAMARB’s Brazilian Business Arbitration and Mediation Competition – is part of the country’s arbitration and mediation events calendar. Every year, it has the participation of students from all over Brazil and abroad as competitors, as well as professionals with renowned experience in arbitration and mediation, as arbitrators and evaluators.
CBAM was created with the purpose of contributing to the dissemination of arbitration and mediation in Brazil, as well as to prepare young students who will work in the market for adequate dispute resolution. Through this pioneering initiative, CAMARB brought to the country the experience of moots international, held all over the world, especially in Europe and North America.
At CBAM, competitors are challenged to resolve a fictitious case through arbitration or business mediation, structured into teams of up to sixteen members. Students can compete in Arbitration or Mediation, with the same case being used for both.

The Competition is divided into “two phases”. In the first phase, called the “written phase”, the arbitration teams must submit two “Memorials” (one defending the requesting party and the other defending the defendant) and the mediation teams, two “Mediation Plans” (one for the requesting party and the other for the defendant), based on the case to be resolved. In the second phase, called the “oral phase”, the teams will act in panels of simulated arbitration hearings/mediation meetings, being evaluated by experienced professionals in the field.
These professionals examine the teams' performance based on criteria such as legal knowledge, argumentation, posture and, in the case of the Mediation Competition, negotiation skills are also considered, as set out in the rules.
In addition to providing valuable hands-on experience for students, the Competition also offers a unique opportunity to networking and learning. Participants have the opportunity to interact with each other and with leading professionals in the field of arbitration and mediation.
CAMARB is recognized for its expertise in the administration of corporate arbitration and mediation procedures in Brazil and abroad, and the Competition is one of the main institutional initiatives to promote the use of these alternative methods of dispute resolution in the corporate market. The Competition has proven to be a success, constituting an important tool for the development of new professionals who wish to specialize in appropriate forms of dispute resolution.
